IN MEMORIAM

Svetlana Paranos

Dr Svetlana Paranos, Associate Professor of Medicine, renowned immunologist and allergologist, died on May 5th 2002.

Svetlana Paranos was born in 1953. She graduated at the School of Medicine in Belgrade in 1978, and finished her residentship in Internal Medicine in 1985. She got the M.S. degree in 1988. In 1994, Dr Svetlana Paranos became the Ph.D. in Allergology. Her special interest was the food allergy. The title of her dissertation was “Nutritive allergy in adults: clinical significance of  in vivo and in vitro tests”.

Svetlana Paranos was the Head of the Division of Allergology and Clinical Immunology  at the University Medical Centre “Bežanijska Kosa” and later became the Director of the Clinic for Internal Medicine in the same Centre. Many allergologists  have been educated in her department and have been guided by her professionalism. Dr Paranos succeeded in combining innovative research with daily clinical bedside work. Colleagues, students, and patients estimated her diligence, intelligence, devotion, and authority. She published 110 articles in various fields of Allergology and Internal Medicine.

Svetlana Paranos was a great personality, and it is a privilege and an honour to have known and worked with her. We, who collaborated with Dr Svetlana Paranos in Yugoslav Association for Allergologists and Clinical Immunologists (YAACI), had an opportunity and luck to see and learn how we have to fight for the improvement of the quality of work, and how important results can be achieved by personal sacrifice. As the President of YACCI for one and half year, she started with publication of official YACCI Information Booklet that was sent to every allergologist in Serbia and Montenegro. She was speaking in favour of active participation of YACCI in educational program of EAACI.  She started the initiative and prepared the EACCI Clinical Update Course Palic 2002. After her premature and unexpected death, the Organising Committee only finalized that work and we hope that every participant will improve his/her knowledge of allergology, and that was her major goal. She was a fighter in every life situation, and we hope that in this way she wins in this last battle.
