ABOUT  THE MEDICUS

UK Registered Charity No. 1088214

The Medicus (British Yugoslav Medical Association) aims to contribute to efforts to advance provision of health care, of medical training and medical science in Yugoslavia.  It strives to assist with the establishment of links between institutions in the UK and Yugoslavia and offers its advisory services to any agencies or institutions which may wish to help Yugoslavia to rebuild its medical schools, specialist training programmes, and health service in general.  The ultimate goal of the Medicus is to help with efforts to close the gap between medical practice in Yugoslavia and the rest of Europe that has resulted from ten years of civil wars, all in the hope that this will help reintegrate Yugoslavia as a fully democratic country in the heart of Europe.

As a result of maladministration, wars and sanctions, Yugoslavia has been devastated over the last ten years. With its ruined economy, huge numbers of refugees, and massive emigration leading to the loss of essential skills, the health services have suffered particularly badly.

The Medicus was established in the Great Britain in December 2000 by a group of medical professionals following the election of the first democratic government in the
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia

The broad aims of the Medicus are to help health services in
Yugoslavia recover as quickly as possible using different approaches that have been defined in the constitution of the association as follows:

1. To promote links between British and Yugoslav medical and related societies and institutions with the aim of raising standards of health education and care in Yugoslavia.

With knowledge of the appropriate institutions in both countries, the Medicus, whose members include a high proportion of professionals born in
Yugoslavia, is in a position to provide the necessary information and advice and to facilitate links and exchanges between institutions in the two countries. The Medicus will proactively establish collaboration with medical institutions in Yugoslavia and respond to enquiries and will approach appropriate bodies in Great Britain.

2. To assist institutions in Yugoslavia acquire modern knowledge through professional, medical and scientific publications and through information technology.

Collect surplus publications and journals, or purchase them, in this country and donate them to libraries in departments, hospitals, and medical education establishments in Yugoslavia. Subscribe to journals and providers of information technology for use in Yugoslavia.

3. To facilitate the exchange of doctors and other health professionals between Great Britain and Yugoslavia in order to promote the exchange of knowledge, techniques and information.

Establish and provide bursaries/grants for doctors and other associated professionals from Yugoslavia to visit centres in Great Britain. Provide bursaries/grants for doctors and other associated professionals from Great Britain to visit Yugoslavia in order to assist colleagues with their work, including training, running courses and holding seminars.

4. To collaborate with British institutions, including humanitarian organisations, on matters related to the provision of aid to hospitals, medical, scientific and healthcare institutions in Yugoslavia.

With its knowledge of the situation in Yugoslavia, the Medicus is in a position to advise British institutions, including humanitarian organisations, on the needs and priorities of various health and other institutions in Yugoslavia and to assist or to join forces with them in achieving a common goal.
